Boys On Pedestals, 2023
Boys On Pedestals began with revisiting an early collage of a young boy and geometric forms, which had remained in my studio for some time. After the election of 2016, the work newly triggered questions of gender, aggression, and the power that begins in children’s play. Why and how do some individuals grow up feeling so entitled to power, while others remain followers? I began a series of 17” x 11” collages, repeating the same image of a boy child among different, changing geometries, altering and uncovering meaning, finding myself increasingly influenced by modernism and Russian Constructivism, particularly the hope for utopia. The series comprises more than 100 collages, and continues to grow; this is a selection.
