Laughing With Eve
Laughing With Eve begins with a photographic image suspended in space. Having worked with this image in a series of paintings, collages and photographs, I decided to focus on the fragmentary qualities in areas of the larger paintings.
"You have a dimension that takes you into the street, into the city, into photography, and then you have this other kind of history in back of the painting, because you can't say 'look at something like that' and not think of the whole 20th century tradition of geometric abstraction. . . . It's a kind of urban realism. . . a beautiful ensemble."

This group of work consists of four 72” x 48” abstract paintings, which were then printed and layered with glass beads; the glass surfaces reflect and refract light as the viewer moves among the work. As I chose different areas of the image, I cut and cropped the original image into sections. There is more depth here than in conventional paintings; the underlying abstract painting is left visible, referencing the process.
Paintings range from 15” x 20” x 1.5” to 60” x 22”. The largest painting includes black ribbon on its surface.
